Thanksgiving shopping online surpasses $1 billion in 2013

Adobe Digital Index measured dual online sales records for Thanksgiving and Black Friday, which saw 400 million visits during the two-day period. The increase in Thanksgiving online sales surpassed last year, breaking the billion-dollar mark at $1.06 billion, with actual spending up 18%. No laggard, Black Friday reached a record of its own, with actual spending jumping to nearly $2 billion ($1.93 billion)—up more than 30% YOY.
Last year, sales started picking up online at 9 a.m. ET on Black Friday. This year things began ramping up three hours earlier as a result of increased in-store mobile shopping and new strategies that staged releases of “door-buster” promotions throughout the day. With in-store shopping happening early in the day on Thanksgiving, consumers appeared to head home sooner and continue shopping online. Online shopping peaked between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. ET on Black Friday, when retailers pulled in $150 million in a single hour.
Wish this becomes a reality in India soon considering the exponential growth we see !

Romantic Insights From Maps of Facebook Networks

"The shape of a person’s social network is a powerful signal that can identify one’s spouse or romantic partner — and even if a relationship is likely to break up." as told by Jon Kleinberg, a computer scientist at Cornell University, and Lars Backstrom, a senior engineer at Facebook.

The pair used a hefty data set from Facebook as their lab: 1.3 million Facebook users, selected randomly from among all users who are at least 20 years old, with from 50 to 2,000 friends, who list a spouse or relationship partner in their profile. That makes for a lot of social connections to analyze, roughly 379 million nodes and 8.6 billion links. The data was used anonymously.

"Nice to have relationships confirmed with lots of data and algorithms",  so will this service be launched in market the coming days for partners to confirm their relationship, just saying ;)

Somersaulting and Self-assembling robots from MIT

They said it couldn’t be done. But it has! MIT researchers recently managed to create self-assembling modular robots. The researchers even released a video demonstrating their success.

The self-assemblage is very basic, but still quite astonishing to behold. How exactly is it done? Well, the robots, called M-blocks, each contain what is called a flywheel that can reach speeds of 20,000 revolutions per minute. By comparison, a jet engine piston turns at 2,000-3,000 revolutions per minute, while a nuclear centrifuge reaches speeds of 90,000 rpm or faster. When the flywheel breaks, its angular momentum is transferred to the cube. Each cube’s edge is equipped with a specialized magnet. All of this works to create the self-assembling modularity of the M-blocks, allowing them to climb, leap, fly through the air and align in a variety of arrangements.

Ultimately, the researchers want to create swarms of self-assembling robots for a variety of applications, such as building temporary bridges or creating scaffolding systems for construction projects. Need a robotic chest for all your goodies? Well, maybe it won’t be a problem in the future with these robots. This is the Future and with certainty I can say that this Will Blow Your Mind.

What Teens post 2006 Vs 2012

The frequency of teen social media usage may have reached a plateau; three in four teen social media users visit the sites on a daily basis.

Older teens who are social media users more frequently share:
  • Photos of themselves on their profile (94% older teens vs. 82% of younger teens)
  • Their school name (76% vs. 56%)
  • Their relationship status (66% vs. 50%)
  • Their cell phone number (23% vs. 11%)
16% of teen social media users have set up their profile to automatically include their location in posts.

African-American teens are substantially more likely to report using Twitter when compared with white youth.

Zeus - The (F)actor behind the Likes on Social Media

Hackers are using the Zeus virus to create bogus ‘likes' and followers that purport to come from users of #Facebook, #Twitter, #Instagram, and other #social media sites. The scheme is aimed at making products appear more popular.

Fake ‘likes’ are sold in batches of 1,000 on internet hacker forums. One thousand fake Instagram followers will cost just US$15, while 1,000 ‘likes’ will go for $30. In comparison, 1,000 #credit card numbers from a stolen PC cost as little as $6.  What’s the price to curb these?

No wonder #GM pulled out of #Social media marketing. What about the Likes/Followers which the politicians have? Well, timing is the essence; all the answers will be slowly rolled out.

Temporo-Parietal Junction - TPN and Social Media

If you want to make something go viral on Facebook or Twitter, TPJ is where you want to hit — because it lights up like a Christmas tree before we even know we're going to share something. The more activated it is, the more persuasive the share. And it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what we think is cool ourselves. This Brain Part Decides What Goes Viral on Social Media.
The TPJ is located around the center on both sides of the brain, just behind your ears. We know its job is to connect us to the thoughts and beliefs of others; the kind of empathy you get from watching a movie or reading a novel. Damage to the TPJ has been known to result in out-of-body experiences: literally stepping outside of yourself.
So the next time you share a great tweet or a cute picture on Facebook and get exactly the "squee!" you were looking for, remember which brain part to thank.

2013's Complex Social Media Landscape in One Chart

When Brian Solis introduced the first Conversation Prism in 2008, the world was a seemingly simpler place. There were 22 social media categories, each of which had just a handful of brands. ("Video agreggation" had only one brand: Magnify.)

Flash forward to 2013, and the latest Conversation Prism (click here for the high-res downloadable version) has four additional categories with at least six brands in each. Like other Conversation Prisms, the data visualization attempts to illustrate the array of social media choices available to marketers. Various channels are classified by their function to the end user (i.e. "photos," "music" and "social curation."

Waze, one Maze is out - Google Cash on now

FB is no is no longer in talks to buy Waze, earlier it was speculated that Google was planning to outbid FB for Waze.

It is reported that the two companies couldn'treach an agreement because Waze wanted to stay in Israel, while Facebook wanted the company to relocate to California.

So let’s see what Google has under its sleeves - keep the bidding price the same? news is out that Gmail Inbox Is About To Change Completely, now we are reading between the lines.

Ideally Waze with Google is my personal preference because future is inevitable without the Google driverless cars and this deal would be perfect synergy

Women use social media 9% more than men.

A new study from the Pew Research Center and Docstoc has few insights that would help steer the future course of marketing .

The title that I shared for this blog was something I wasn't really sure of till now, but the most from the rest  were certainly expected.

By the way did i tell you that its Linkedin but not twitter after facebook in terms of popularity !

Check out the enhancements which Linkedin made to its layout and the way they moved space assigned for the notifications and going with just "in" as logo rather than the whole name.

Indian elections - Social media, Friend not a Foe !

A study, a copy of which is with The Hindu, has, for the first time, shown how social media can affect the results of the next Lok Sabha elections. Conducted by the IRIS Knowledge Foundation and the Internet and Mobile Association of India, the research claims that results in over 150 constituencies could be decided by ‘Facebook users, making them the newest vote-bank with the power to shape Indian politics.’

Boss or a Leader ?

Today I was thinking how I would differentiate a Boss from a leader and this image summed it up so well.

Remember the difference between a boss and a leader;
a boss says 'Go!' - a leader says 'Let's go!'.

A good Leader makes his men realize they have more ability than they think they have so that they consistently do better work than they thought they could.

I choose to be Leader, how about you?

Social Media according to you ?

According Forrester Research’s most recent Interactive Marketing Forecast, social media marketing will grow at an annual rate of 34% -– faster than any other form of online marketing and double the average growth rate of 17% for all online mediums.

This article also has 12 compelling reasons listed to use social media to help grow your business, though most of what they have  in my view are generic and redundant, my personal pick would be the first which is important and foundation of it all - "Own your brand’s social presence", what is your pick from these?

Whatsapp ! Google ?

OK so here is what it looks like - last year it was  Facebook’s love towards Instagram

There are rumors that the deal started four or five weeks ago, Google and Whatsapp are yet to form a consensus on price. The rumor of this acquisition comes hot on the heels of another rumor that claims Google is developing its own cross platform messaging service called Google Babble.

Google has previously done the same with Sparrow, a very popular mail application for iOS, which it acquired back in July 2012. One of the report righty says that Google "can't afford the time to rebrand and rebuild a competitive messaging app at the risk of entering the game too late - or, it needs to be able to work off the platform WhatsApp has already established and use this technology to fill out the purported Babble.

I hope Google nails this deal. Having WhatsApp under its belt would definitely put Google in a better position to emerge as a major player in the cross platform messaging niche.

  • Who do I want to be?
  • Do you want to lead by listening?
  • Do you want to lead by building sincere and caring work relationships?

Apple and Google - Target to Travel

Times certainly have changed, and Google can vouch for that. According to a report from Morgan Stanley, Google could pay more than $1 billion in 2014 to remain the default search engine on iOS. In 2009, Google paid only $82 million for the privilege.

The Journey which these two have been through so far has been quite adventurous, thanks to the android OS and Samsung smartphones which made this possible.

Google’s logic is simple, irrespective of acquiring or partnering they want to travel through any means across and within as a Target if a need be so to pay (in billions) and not surprisingly Apple agreed to have them on their iOS in the past and wouldn’t be surprised to see them they do so this year too even after having a pile 140 billion stacked up.

Microsoft is it only wishing to be their search engine or are they doing something about it? Let’s hope they have some plans in place

Facebook - knows where you are :)

Facebook is “developing a smartphone application that will track the location of users … even when the program isn’t open on a handset.” The purpose of such an app is to help Facebookers find friends when they’re out and about.  It will be interesting to see what users are OK with Facebook knowing where they are some of the time, but not all of the time.

I hope this will be of great help to us in connecting people around more effectively and they are honest enough in letting the world know about this. This app is scheduled for release around mid-march.

#Innovative - #Google, #Apple or #Facebook ?

There is such intense competition in the market that the companies are now looking forward to take their innovation to another level, am I taking about the product innovation? You wish I did, but I am talking about the place at which they build and develop their products.
  • Google announced plans for a £1bn London office in King’s Cross.
  • Apple has commissioned Lord Foster to design a huge headquarters in California.
  • Facebook is working on plans for its new HQ with the architect of the Bilbao Guggenheim, Frank Gehry.
There are rounds around that Apple has envisioned the best plan among the three so far, you can read the complete article here and it is provisionally due to open in 2016. I hope the peers are planning architect marvels which might be unique to their belief and culture which also at the same time would not comprise in sharing their innovative quotient with the market as a "PLACE".

"I believe in this"

I read this article today on Forbes - 40 Things To Say Before You Die, though it is an older article the relevance of this article is so apt and the one thing which stood out from the many listed for me was  - "I believe in this."

A plan, a company, a person, an idea—we have to put our faith in something. And  for me believing plays a vital role in making a choice which helps me push forward and inorder for this to happen "I believe" and I believe that all things work together for Good in our Journey called "Life".

Apple Getting - Affordable or Cheaper ?

Looks like Apple Inc has taken my views with an quite a intent. To carry on from my previous blog where i shared that they have been losing market share in Europe to Google. Today I read an article Apple is Workingon a Less-Expensive iPhone thanks to the Google Inc.'s Android operating system which is gaining market share. And if you are reading this, you should know that the Digital entertainment downloads top £1bn for first time in 2012

This may be contrary to the belief of Apple which prided itself on prioritizing profits over scale. Even small changes in margins often sway investors so please be watchful dear Apple.

If asked about if I like this move the answer would be a Yes, but would not trade the Android for that because the apps these guys have are way too many and are cool when compared with Apple.

Apple Rules the Roast, but till when

According to sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the iPhone now has 53% of the U.S. smartphone market, its highest ever share of the market, up from just 37% a year ago. Android is at 42%, down from 53% a year ago.

But, it's not all good news for Apple. In the five big European countries — England, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain — Android took 61% of the market, up from 52% a year ago. Apple picked up a few points of share, but not as many as Android.

Got this article as a reference link from an HBR article, this is one of the best article that I read around smartphones. Read to know the surprising answers to those seemingly unrelated questions around smartphones.
